Combating terrorism is a way of life…
Although I followed the exploits of terrorists throughout the 1970s while I was growing up, my ambition to rid the world of Islamic radicals began in 1979 when Iranian “students” overran our sovereign territory and manifested itself in 1983
(when I was deployed in the Western Pacific) when they murdered hundreds of Marines in Beirut. I promised myself from that moment that I would do something about the outrage when I left the military to strike out on my own.
I do not take things lightly, nor do I always trust that others will serve a role when needed. When I personally accepted the challenge of fighting global terrorism, I knew that I was merely a small piece of a monstrous jigsaw puzzle. The first thing that I did – beginning on those long deployments at sea when the alternatives were poker games and sleep – was to begin studying about the trade. I consumed everything that I could about warfare and history. From the Peloponnesian War to Rome’s assault on Jerusalem; from the Great Plains Indian Wars of the American West to Biblical tales of the siege of Jericho; from ancient ninja ‘mind control’ tactics to long-range patrol and reconnaissance missions; I devoured it all.
Yet, my life is not all academics. I grew up on an island where I learned to wade through marshes and shallows undetectable to the wildlife. I descended from generations of hunters and outdoorsmen and my personal definition of good shooting is “tack driving” regardless of the distance. I have been in the jungles of Brazil and the hills of Hawaii; from sea level to 14,000 feet is my domain. Actually, from 1oo feet below sea level as I scuba dove while in Hawaii (mostly at night due to our workload).
My ability to leap beyond traditional thought, however, is my greatest asset and being a creative/analytical personality is where I benefit you the most. I do not just “think outside of the box” – my thoughts rest nowhere near the box.
